Drivers Checklist

The spread of the Norwalk virus is accelerated on coaches, buses, planes and trains. You may be the first person to spot the problem. It is imperative you inform the Hotel Management of any incidents of sickness on the coach.

Being prepared
If an outbreak of Norwalk Virus occurs on a coach, the number of guests infected can be controlled by rapid action by the driver. Always carry the following equipment:

  • Body spillage kits - these contain the products necessary to safely clean up after an incident.
  • Face mask - to be worn when cleaning a contaminated area.
  • Sick bags - these may be kept in a locker and only put in the seatback pockets in times of high alert.
  • Virucidal air freshner - if this is sprayed around the area where a passenger has vomited, it will help to kill any airborne virus.
  • Virucidal surface cleaner - use to clean the toilet when someone has been sick of had diarrhoea in the toilet. Also usful to clean the hand holds at the entrance to the coach and along the aisle.

Guests affected on the coach
Make use of the body spillage kits provided. If you don’t have one on board the hotel may provide one for the duration of your stay. It should be returned before departure.

  • If someone is sick on the coach, make sure that the air conditioning is not recirculating the air.
  • If the passenger was sick in the toilets, suggest that the others do not use the toilet until you have had a chance to clean it with virucidal surface cleaner - unless in an emergency.
  • At the earliest opportunity, stop the coach and decontaminate the area using the body spillage kit and virucidal air spay.
  • If still close to home anyone affected should be returned to their home address via alternative transport.
  • If on a day excursion, organise a taxi for anyone affected to be taken back to the hotel immediately.

Decontaminate a coach
As soon as any cases have been diagnosed the coach must be fogged as follows:

  • Dress in the protective clothing that has been supplied - Boiler Suit, Hat, Safety Goggles, Respirator Mask, Rubber Gloves, Disposable foot covers.
  • Close windows.
  • Pour a 1litre of Cryocide into the fogger and fill with water to give a 4:1 dilution.
  • Switch on air conditioning set to recirculate.
  • Enter the coach holding the generator with one person at the door holding the extension cable.
  • Walk to the back of the coach and turn the fogging machine unit on and point the spray so that a light covering vapour lands on all surfaces. If there is a toilet fitted to the coach make sure is is well sprayed especially around the toilet seat.
  • Walk backwards towards the door.
  • Close the door and leave for 30 minutes. Re-enter the coach and open all the windows.
  • If there are cases of sickness on coaches returning home the coach should be fogged before picking up new passengers.
